Raksha Bandhan, as the name suggests, is about brothers protecting their sisters.

In this movie, Akshay Kumar has four sisters whom he needs to take care of. He promised his dying mother that he himself will not get married until he finds a groom for all four sisters. He needs to arrange dowry money and to add to his woes, his longtime girlfriend is getting impatient with him and their delayed marriage. How Akshay Kumar goes about arranging the dowry money and getting his four sisters married and salvaging his own relationship is what the movie is all about.

Now while the movie tries to convey a social message about dowry, and Akshay Kumar has been the flag bearer of social messages lately, this movie comes across as extremely regressive.

The sisters are shown as caricatures with each representing the outdated mindset of our society.

One sister is obese, one is dark colored, and one is a tomboy. These three sisters are Akshay Kumar’s biggest worries!

While the pretty, slim, fair skinned sister is the least of his worries and sure enough, she is the one that gets married first and with relative ease!

What sort of message is this? Are we saying that girls need to look a certain way to be ‘accepted’ by men?

Since this movie is about the bond between brothers and sisters, surely there will be some moments that’ll get you misty eyed and emotional but overall, this movie is extremely tone deaf and shallow with loud and cringeworthy humor where the brother, the man, is shown as the savior making sacrifices for his hopeless sisters.
