5 misconceptions about Desis living in America

by Sannan Wastani

With the word ‘Desis’ comes the stereotypes attached to the people called. Desis are usually interpreted as ‘uncivilised brown people with a weird accent’. Most of these misconceptions have been in the minds of many Americans since generations. Not only are these misconceptions untrue, but they are also hilarious as well. Here are some of them:

You must be good at Math

Most South Asians are known for their math skills which is why every desi kid is also misinterpreted as a ‘math freak’. While this is sort of true, many of us can’t even count our own fingers, much like anybody else.

You Can Speak English

Desis often get to see raised eyebrows and impressed looks, when they speak English. While other South Asians might fail to speak English fluently, Desis are taught English at a young age. The white people probably haven’t seen the passion and vocabulary of an Indian kid at a Spelling bee competition!

You can talk to your fiancé before marriage

Many Desis opt for an arranged marriage, but that doesn’t mean they are forced into one. Most of them have the freedom to talk before marriage as well! Oh, we use Tinder and Bumble too!

You must be very religious

While most of the Desis believe in God, that doesn’t mean it implies to all of them. And that CLEARLY doesn’t mean that all Desis are extremists when it comes to religion. We have fanatics, atheists and everything in between. Choose your pick.

Many immigrants end up facing these stereotypes, but they are also loved for who they are and their eccentric cultures. Have some biryani with them and you’ll end up being friends for life.
